The 'Mountain Man'

Below is an excerpt from Hell's Angels by Hunter S. Thompson. (Also wrote 'Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas'). Hunter spent a year on the road with the Angels in the 1960's, documenting their marauding ways. This paragraph reminds me of a good friend of mine who is known around our parts as the 'Mountain Man'. Below may help to explain a little about his own personal brand of 'justice'

"In the Carolinas they say 'hill people' are different from 'flat-lands people', and as a native Kentuckian with more mountain than flatlands blood, I'm inclined to agree. This was one of the theories i'd been nursing all the way from San Francisco. Unlike Porterville or Hollister, Bass Lake was a mountain community... and if the old Appalachian pattern held, the people would be much slower to anger or panic, but absolutely without reason or mercy once the fat was in the fire. Like the Angels, they would tend to fall back in an emergency on their own native sense of justice – which bears only a primitive resemblance to anything written in law books. I thought the mountain types would be far more tolerant of the Angels' noisy showboating, but – compared to their flatlands cousins–much quicker to retaliate in kind at the first evidence of physical insult or abuse."

Given the synergy of working with Whales, wink, wink I was stoked to work them up a logo for the series that you will see in this clip... Look forward to more witty whale tales ;P

We did the title shoot for the doco on the weekend in our mate Hayden's garage... First official Puerto Vs Kapow collaboration too! Had a big team helping out with the jam as we had a blast throwing paint, drinking with Dexter the parrot & general goodtimes... Jack "the man" Shanahan took these tasty snaps in between filming (Go to his site for more pics). We shot a full timelapse of the whole deal, so we should have that online real soon! The movie preview is on its way to LA as we speak, were looking for some funding to bring this thing to the people!

Well I'm back in the land of OZ and almost over the jetlag jam, settling into some crisp autumn weather. I bought a fixed fisheye lomo camera in LA and got back my first rolls today. Subsequently learnt you need lots of light to get nice shots or just bang a flash in your subjects face. This is probably my favorite pic, shot on Manhattan. I probably caught about 50 yellow cabs in the one week we were in New York..... ;P

Well yesterday was quite surreal. We travelled out to New York state
to listen to the tales of Tim Boggan, saw some stars on the red carpet
downtown & rocked out to Shiny Toy Guns at Webster Hall... All in a
days work hey.

Then today we filmed some sequences in the subway & met the
godfather of ping pong in New York, Marty Reisman. The guys a living
legend and we got to play him in the basement of a ritzy hotel. A nice
cover for his underground club. We were told to take the elevator to
the basement, take a left along the hallway and hollar. So we put
several hours in there and just finished some dinner at 1am...

Wally Green is taking us down to Harlem tomorrow... Can't wait ;P

NYC Japanese Style Polaroids

Well the tour is in full swing! It's been a whirlwind lead up to our
current residence in downtown New York. Luke and I flew to LA last
week and caught a train straight down to Sunny San Diego! We stayed at
my good friend Sarah's apartment for 2 days, drinking beer, eating
great Mexican & flaring on the gaslight strip & pacific beach. Just
made our flight to Vegas nursing cryptic hangovers and were blown away
by the sites and sounds of sin city. What followed in the next two
days and nights was definitely some of the wildest times I've ever
had! Luke and I were neck deep in blackjack syndicates throwing down
greenbacks, sippin on whiskey and scotch with cocktail waitresses who
looked like they were straight out of a Victoria Secret catalouge. We
were up, we were down, we were down, down, down. But never dropped a
beat because hell, it was Vegas! Our casino had an amazing outdoor
pool, which was our oasis in the Nevada desert. One hour sleep, still
wearing my boots and a hat, we got our 430 wake up call and once again
rushed to catch our flight into New York.

We settled into our apartment in lower Manhattan, and freshened up
before getting our first pepperoni slice of the trip. Then it was
goodtimes when the rest of the crew, Rummy, Hollywood, Dunks & Big Top
rolled up that night in big van. So offcourse it was slices all round
and down to an irish pub to compare storys and a few pints. Then out
of the dark at about 1am in walks a client and good friend of
Bluefish, George S. Completly random, I'd had a meeting with him a
week prior and neither of us had mentioned our trips. So of all the
bars in all the world, a small dusty old Irish pub in NYC turned into
a melting pot of more stories and ideas into the wee hours.

It feels almost surreal that were here now exploring the frosty
streets... Today was our first day of shooting, time lapses in Times
Square, steam out of the subway and all the boys rolling downtown. A
quiet dinner at Alonso's Steakhouse tonight before we head out to Long
Island tomorrow to meet the worlds greatest Ping Pong historian, Tim
Boggan...

I don't know if I've ever met someone who doesn't like polaroids... so when they decided to stop making the film, those fat cats in charge must have been smoking some serious crack! But lucky the people in the engine room have been smoking a much more pleasant blend & have taken control... fyi

Rather than let Polaroid technology die out completely, a number of former workers have combined to try and resuscitate instant film. Under the name Impossible, they purchased Polaroid’s Dutch factory (where the film was produced) and will set to work in attempt of a 2010 relaunch. The film will be improved, but work in vintage Polaroid cameras.

We've been pretty spoilt with snow over the last week, generally
getting a few inches each night...just in time for us to breeze
through the trees and float across the silver lining! But the sun
eventually came out & it hasn't snowed in days. There is something so
alluring about untouched snow, so smooth and silky, just crying out to
be carved, smashed & bashed! So when most of the main trails have been
ridden it's time for a search & destroy mission. Cutting back and
forth, winding in and out of trees, looking for that small patch of
glory to hack into the trees or glide across... Right now I'm chilling
after a days searching, sitting in the arvo sun about to crack a
beer... Tough times ;P

Picked up this fresh new setup, RIDE DH Freetstyle board, Burton
Mission bindings & Salomon boots...It's Been smooth on the mountain
but still doesn't stop me crashing! We've had 3 days of riding now,
snows been great~ thick powder off the main trails & heaps of tree
runs. Up the top of the mountain it's so cold that the pine trees are
like huge ice sculptures... I call it Sasquatch country... Took my
first big stack yesterday & landed face first after a jump & shattered
my goggles. FYI another $100 US for some new ones. It's snowing again
this morning so it's off frolic in -10 white stuff! ;P

Dear History,

For too long have I pondered your meaning, memorized dates of battles, years of servitude, decades of injustice, named eras after movements, mourned the extinction of species, cursed founding fathers, worn vintage suits and cloaked myself with references of your hold on me.

In 1995, I stood with poets in the middle of the Brooklyn Bridge, barking metaphors at the new moon of the summer solstice wedging words into it's craters, sewing seeds through nightly wind.

In 1996, I forced the ocean back with words, fathered planets, climbed pyramids, and began to decipher the sirens song to conjure the dream-filled Children of the Night.

In 1997, I stood with prisoners in our nations capitol bending bars with the power of thought as wordsmiths served sentences and Hip Hop diddy-dandified itself: stealing golden calves from the Old Testament to smuggle into the lavish crib of Pontius Pilate for it's birthday party

In 1998, I swallowed fear and sun-danced on film reels, projecting a me that had not been into a me that ever shall be.

And HERE I stand, ten years the difference and witness to changing hands.

Dear History,
I beat you. I stand a generator of generations bearing witness to a world that we are holding accountable for past actions. Me and my friends, we're changing our diets, re-inventing marriage, check-mating capitalism, re-defining ethics, replacing cruelty with compassion, and have sworn not to re-elect the sins of the father.

We are casting our votes for so much more than a lesser of evils, but for change, and greater insight, for wisdom out of the mouths of babes, for races that bleed into ONE.

Dear History,
You are behind us and we are no longer looking back. We are standing on the threshold of new times, new days, new worlds, and charging forward without battle cry or trumpet, while cynicism, apathy, and cowardice take their place beside you, behind us.

Dear History,
We no longer believe in you. We have invested our our thoughts and dreams into the present moment and opportunity to shift our reality into one that does not resemble your dog-eared books.

We stand on the shoulders of those who have dared to dream and on the necks of those who have wasted their time and ours proclaiming a past past its prime.

Dear History,
Blitz! It's my turn now. You can have your mounds of flesh, leather boots, cannons and sabers, nooses and guillotines, warships and fighter planes, trails of tears and blood, genocides, dungeons and dragons, ghost stories and fairy tales..........

Doomsday Dream...

End of days.

I was with my mother & brother.

A friend of mine was infected with a type of violent psychosis.

I recently learnt that he wants to kill me.
It seems his rage is targeted but for no clear reason.

One by one more people fall ill & threaten those around them.
The streets begin to flood with those looking for a cure.

A mystery van rolls into town and offers an expensive but tangible defence
available only for the rich or corrupt. They are a series of strange metallic objects that lend themselves more to confusion than any real solution, but are quickly stolen with an unnerving ease, as the gathering mob becomes restless.

We leave quickly and barracade our home for the impending chaos.

My vision is interjected with flashes of several seething pits of snakes, rats & cats
all fighting for survival. Striking. Biting. Clawing. Raping. Pillaging.
Not fighting to get free, but simply to destroy each other.
A vision of hellish desperation.
Then a large rare sabre-tooth breaks into the pit & ravenges them all.

Now my hunter has broken in and the fight breaks out. His eyes are red with a mix of hatred & fear. Scared not of me but of himself. With our mother in danger, my brother & I become ruthless, striking blows with lethal force to overpower him. Finally we pin him down to the concrete floor with a metal pole against his neck. Like kicking your own dog that’s turned against you... a sick feeling hits my stomach and remorse trys to break in.

Then as if someone whispered an antidote in his ear, his body loosened and slipped free of our grip. A team of agent like men and women enter the yard and capture him with no struggle. His eyes turn to face me and I see my old friend once again through spilling tears. A silent understanding of sorry is exchanged with no malice for each other, only the situation, as I follow them to the street.

The agents begin to examine my fingernails to check for infection, but swiftly move on.
My brother is not so lucky and is taken away before I’ve realised what was happening.

No answers only emptiness.

I’m torn back to a vision of the victorious beast. He wanders where the woods meet the city. Time has passed and his family has grown to many. I don’t fear they will hurt me, but am unnerved by their presence. Soon they will learn to walk on two legs.

As mum & I walk back to the house, a man with a purse made from two leather hearts follows me. His look seeks refuge, but I cannot risk all that I have left to give him shelter.

I bid him good luck...

and shut the door.

The constant reminder of positive affirmation from your teachers. Whether you were a "Good Reader", "Willing Worker" or simply "Did you Best!" There was a sticker to suit any occasion! Even if you were the kid who glued his hand to the scissors, Mrs Jones would whip out the "Crafty Kid" Metallic number and whack it on your itchy woolen jumper for all to see.

And when you'd got home & finished lapping up Mums positive praise and afternoon treats, you'd carefully add it to your book of personal greatness, knowing that one day this badboy collection was going to land your your dream job taste testing bubble gum or teaching people to be Ninjas!!!! ... well I do!

True story, I was happy. My girlfriend and I had been dating for over a year,
and so we decided to get married. My parents helped us in every way, my friends
encouraged me, and my girlfriend? She was a dream! There was only one thing bothering
me, very much indeed, and that one thing was her younger sister. My prospective sister
-in-law was twenty years of age, wore tight mini skirts and low cut blouses. She would
regularly bend down when near me and I got many a pleasant view of her underwear. It had
to be deliberate. She never did it when she was near anyone else. One day little sister
called and asked me to come over to check the wedding invitations. She was alone when
I arrived. She whispered to me that soon I was to be married, and she had feelings and
desires for me that she couldn't overcome and didn't really want to overcome. She told
me that she wanted to make love to me just once before I got married and committed my
life to her sister. I was in total shock and couldn't say a word. She said, "I'm going
upstairs to my bedroom, and if you want to go ahead with it just come up and get me." I
was stunned. I was frozen in shock as I watched her go up the stairs. When she reached
the top she pulled down her panties and threw them down the stairs at me. I stood there
for a moment, then turned and went straight to the front door. I opened the door and
stepped out of the house. I walked straight towards my car. My future father-in-law was
standing outside. With tears in his eyes he hugged me and said, "We are very happy that
you have passed our little test. We couldn't ask for a better man for our daughter. Welcome
to the family.
